South and Central America, Caribbean & Antarctica

Number of type specimens per family from the type collections of South and Central America, Caribbean and Antarctica. Only the ten families with the highest number of specimens are shown.

The whole collection of vascular plant types from South, Central America and Caribbean comprises almost 21,400 specimens. Most of them, nearly 6300 are types from Brazil. The second largest type collection from South America refer to Cuba with almost 2200 types, followed by Haiti, Ecuador and Bolivia with 1450,  1220, and 1200 types respectively (approximated numbers).

There are types of nearly 15,000 species, belonging to 2500 different genera and 250 families. The most representative families (in number of type specimens) among type collections from South and Central America are Asteraceae (1530 types), Fabaceae (1120), Rubiaceae (905), Melastomataceae (900), Poaceae (870), and Myrtaceae (800).

The most representative genera (in number of specimens) are Piper (380 types), Peperomia (365), Eugenia (320), Miconia (300), and Guatteria (235).

Among our type collections from South and Central America, there are specimens collected by more than 600 different collectors. The collector with the largest number of type specimens is Erik Leonard Ekman (3020 types), followed by Olof Swartz, (920 types) who collected mainly in Jamaica and Caribbean islands, Charles Wright with 880 types from Cuba, Anders Fredrik Regnell with 720 types collected in Brazil, specially in Minas Gerais State; Per Karl Dusén with 659 types collected mainly in Brasil, but also in Argentina, Chile and Paraguay; Émile Hassler with  640 type collected mainly in Paraguay, Adolpho Ducke, with 630 types collected in Amazon region; Gustaf Malme, with 580 types collected mainly in  Brasil; and Auguste Glaziou, 520 types collected in Brazil, especially in Rio de Janeiro and Goiás States.
