Type collections from Asia

The whole collection of types from Asia comprises more than 5200 specimens. Most of them are types of species collected in China (680 types). The second largest type collection from Asia is from Indonesia with 630 types. Other important type collections from Asia are from Papua New Guinea with 610 types; Philippines (355); and Malaysia with 310 types.

There are types of more than 4600 different species, belonging to almost 1250 genera and 200 families. The most representative families (in number of type specimens) among type collections from Asia are Asteraceae (380 types), Orchidaceae (315), Fabaceae (305), Poaceae (210), Dryopteridaceae (195), Lauraceae (160), and Polypodiaceae (145).

The genera with greatest number of type specimens among the collections from Asia are Astragalus (185 types), Polypodium (120), Dryopteris (110), Cousinia (70) and Asplenium and Dendrobium (60).

There are almost 450 different collectors that have collected in Asia among our type collections. The collector with the largest amount of specimens among our type collections form Asia is Adolph Elmer with almost 450 type specimens, gathered in Malaysia and the Philipines in the beginning of the 20th century. The second main collector among our type collections from Asia is Karl Kotschy with more than 300 types collected in the Middle East region, especially in Iran, Iraq and Turkey. Other important collectors (in number of specimens) in our type collections from Asia are Rudolf Schlechter with 290 types collected mainly in Papua New Guinea and Indonesia; Karl H. Rechinger with almost 250 types collected in Iran, Iraq, and Afghanistan; Harry Smith (210) which collected in China; and Gunnar Kjellberg with nearly 200 types collected in Sulawesi.
