Type collections

The Department of Botany at the Swedish Museum of Natural History (S) have more than 55,000 vascular plant type specimen.

The majority of the vascular plant type specimens in our type collections are from South and Central America with more than 21,000 specimens, representing nearly 50% of the total number of types. There are nearly 10,000 type specimens collected in Africa, representing almost 23% of the total type collection.

Asian types' collection is the third largest with nearly 5,200 specimens or 13% of the total. There are also almost 3,000 types from North America (or 7%), around 1,500 from Australia & Oceania (~4%), and 2,000 from Europe (~4%). Most of our type collections are from the nineteenth century, a effervescent period for explorations, new species discoveries, and taxonomic studies.
