Thermal ionization mass spectrometry

The thermal ionization mass spectrometer (TIMS) is a Triton from Thermo Finnigan that was installed in 2006. It is equipped with nine Faraday detectors and one secondary electron multiplier with RPQ filter for small signals. The sample magazine can house 21 samples. It is used for high-precision radiogenic isotope analysis.

Current methods:

  • U-Pb dating, isotope dilution, single grains of baddeleyite and zircon
  • Pb-Pb, isotope compositionRb-Sr, isotope dilution and Sr-isotope composition
  • Sm-Nd, isotope dilution and Nd-isotope composition
  • Rb-Sr, isotope dilution and Sr-isotope composition
