MSc Stockholm University, Sweden, 2003.
PhD Stockholm University, Sweden, 2008.
Principal investigator for research projects concerning the deep biosphere, foremost in oceanic crust, but also in continental crust, including impact craters and urban underground environments. I am a supervisor for master’s and doctoral students at Stockholm University and other European Universities.
My research is focused on the deep biosphere of the ocean crust. A majority of the microorganisms on Earth are believed to exist in the ocean crust but our knowledge of this biosphere is limited. By studying fossilized microorganisms I aim to understand the abundance, diversity and ecology of this hidden biosphere.
I study both modern ocean floors, as well as ancient, since the origin and evolution of life can be traced to these deep environments. Additionally, I work on the terrestrial deep biosphere, life associated with hydrothermal activity and with impact craters.
My research is funded by the Swedish Research Council (VR), the Swedish National Space Board, and Nordic Center for Earth Evolution (NordCEE).
