Rhaetian and Jurassic plants of Scania
This database includes the Rhaetian and Jurassic plant fossils from Scania, southern Sweden, housed in the Stockholm collections.
The major part are from the Rhaetian and Liassic. The collections include a total of 28 105 specimens of which 48% are identified. The material includes both macrofossils and related preparations. Most of the fossils are compressions or impressions of leaves preserved in coal and sand- to claystones, often shale.
The fossil material has been collected by 62 different collectors, and for 44% of the material the collector is known. Four hundred and forty five taxa are recorded, which includes 86 type specimens. Three thousand, two hundred and fifty-four preparations, mainly cuticle slides exist. Two thousand and twenty-three specimens have been published in 63 publications by 19 authors.
Alfred Gabriel Nathorst collected many of the specimens and contributed 22 publications on the collections. Nathorst also made important contribution to the geology and stratigraphy of the Mesozoic strata of Scania. Nathorst was professor and head of the Department of Palaeobotany at the Swedish Museum of Natural History from 1885 until 1917 and active here until his death in 1921.
