Courses in animal diversity
Scientists at the Department of Zoology participate in the teaching of biology at Stockholm University. We are responsible for the two 10-credit master courses Animal Diversity - Invertebrates (BL7044) and Animal Diversity - Vertebrates (BL7034) organised by the Department of Biological Education (BIG) at Stockholm University. The courses are part of the master programme in Systematics and Biodiversity, which is a collaboration between several Swedish and Norwegian universities.
Teaching is largely done remotely, but in the course on invertebrate animals, a two-week field trip at the Tjärnö Marine Laboratory is included. This provides an opportunity for close encounters with most of the major groups within the animal kingdom in their natural habitats.
Both courses deal with the diversity of animals from a phylogenetic and systematic perspective using data from comparative anatomy, developmental biology, genetics, and genomics etc. The students become familiar with the main groups of the animal kingdom, current hypotheses on animal evolution, and how such hypotheses can be used to shed light on questions about evolutionary patterns and processes.
Supervision of independent work, research and collection practice
In addition to teaching courses, we supervise students who do projects in zoological systematics and biodiversity, at bachelor or master level. We are available to supervise master theses within our research field and we can provide suggestions for projects. We also supervise in the individual courses basic/advanced Research Internship in Biology I & II, which means that students get to work on a research project.
On the collection side, we can also supervise within the course Internship in Biology with a focus on curatorial collection work with the zoological research collections. Common to all courses in independent work and internship is that we cannot guarantee to accept anyone as it depends on the availability of supervisors in a particular semester. However, you are welcome to contact us well before your project is scheduled to start.
