Type collections

The type collections of the Department of Phanerogamic Botany at the Swedish Museum of Natural History (S) comprises nearly 48,000 type specimens. The majority of the type specimens in our type collections are from South and Central America with more than 21,000 specimens, representing nearly 50% of the total number of types. There are nearly 10,000 type specimens collected in Africa, representing almost 23% of the total type collection. The Asian type collection is the third largest with nearly 5,200 specimens or 13% of the total. There are also almost 3,000 types from North America (or 7%), around 1,500 from Australia & Oceania (~4%), and 2,000 from Europe (~4%). Most of our type collections are from the nineteenth century, a period of intense exploration with a lots of discoveries of species and taxonomic studies.
