Ophiuroid type species names
The ophiuroid type collection contains 196 lots of 109 species after a recent (1999) revision. As with all our collections, the separation of type material from the main collection had never been completed. About 50 additional lots have now been identified as type material or probable type material and transferred from the main collection to the separate type collection. Previously, many species names in our type catalogue had been changed when a species was synonymised, thus masking the identity of the material as type of another name. All names have now been checked and if necessary restored. Also, some lots had to be removed from the type collection because they proved not to be type material. Despite this effort, some type material may still remain in our main collection unknown to us. The most important part of this collection are the 100 lots of 70 species described by A.V. Ljungman, which constitute all but one of the ophiuroid species names described by him. The following list gives species names with author and year and is sorted by specific name. For more detailed information or if you suspect that we might have a type that is not listed here, please contact the echinoderm curator Sabine Stöhr.
