The type collection

A separate type collection with a type catalogue was initiated during early World War II when preparations were made for transfer of the most precious parts of the collections, to safer housing outside Stockholm. This transfer was never completed, but many of the type lots of invertebrates were separated and listed in a type catalogue.
After this time, most new acquisitions of type material were entered in the type collection, but due to incomplete labelling, return of loans after the death of the recipient and similar conditions this was not always the case, and much type material remains in the general collection.

Which species are present in the type collection?

For reasons given above, the type collection does not, by any means, contain all types housed in our collections. Therefore, instead of publishing the current type catalogue, we find it better to list the authors of which we are aware of the presence of types in the collections. This will give a hint that even if there are no types of a certain species currently recognized, it may be worthwhile to have a look for them in the general collections.
If you want to check for the presence of types from a certain author, select the group of animals and a list of authors will appear. In a few cases, also a list of species names is now available on the same page.
This list is unlikely to be complete, and if you have any suspicion that types may be present
in our collections, please do not hesitate to contact our contact persons.

The "type concept"

The presence of so-called "types" in the type collection does not necessarily mean that they are types in the present concept of the "International Code of Zoological Nomenclature". The concept used by various cataloguers, covers everything from "figured specimens" and "typical specimens" to holotypes as defined today.
The staff at the Department of Invertebrate Zoology will, as far as possible, assist in evaluating the status of type material, but we are also grateful for all help from taxonomic specialists.

Loans

Loans of type material for scientific research are issued to scientific institutions and the institution is responsible for the return of the loan.
