Fieldwork in Laos with malaisetrap

Current research in the Department of Entomology is aimed at charting current insect diversity and  understanding where, when and how it evolved.
In our research projects, the focus is on the world fauna and how it evolved. Morphological and molecular data are used to reconstruct phylogenetic relationships and past geographic distributions, which help explain the diversification of different groups of insects.

In one project, the spectacular radiation of caddisflies (Trichoptera) is studied in the Southern Hemisphere. Other groups that are currently studied is Coleoptera, Hymenoptera, Diptera and Arachnida.

Our large insect collection with more than 3 M specimens is continuously expanding from extensive field work around the world, mainly in tropical and subtropical regions.
