The Changing Earth

This theme deals with the following:

  • Materials
  • Processes and correlates between processes
  • The interplay between the Earth and life
  • The Earth in space and time

Knowledge about the transitional change of the earth´s crust is fundamental for our understanding of geological processes and their influence on long-term changes in the conditions for animals and plants. The research at the Swedish Museum of Natural History concerns the Fennoscandian bedrock, and its relation to the development of the bedrock in other parts of the world, as well as the movements of tectonic plates, and the creation and erosion of mountain ranges. It also involves, e.g., the establishment of detailed time scales for the development of the earth´s crust, mineral chemistry, signs of early life, and the flow of elements between different reservoirs on earth. The research on biogeochemical cycles encompasses both biology-palaentology and geology-isotope geochemistry.
