RHAETIAN AND JURASSIC PLANTS OF SCANIA

Age and Stratigraphy of the Plant Bearing Formation

The plant bearing sandstones, mudstones, and coal belonging to the “coal formation"* (the Bjuv, and the Helsingborg Members, Höganäs Formation) in Scania are considered Late Triassic to Early Jurassic in age. The Triassic-Jurassic boundary lies between the Bjuv Member and the Helsingborg Member. The upper coal seam of the Bjuv Member constitutes the uppermost part of Triassic present in Scania and the Boserups beds (Helsingborg Member) the lowermost Jurassic (Troedsson, 1943; Lundblad, 1950; Sivhed, 1984; Norling, Ahlberg, Erlström and Sivhed, 1993).

*Historically used name on the strata in Scania with coal layers.
