The Nordic herbarium

The Nordic herbarium has more than 1 million vascular plant specimens, gathered during the 250 years that have passed since the late 18th century.

The collections are used to elucidate the distribution, past and present, of the various species.

Valuable source

The material has been collected in many different places, and is therefore a valuable source for understanding morphological variation within species. Thus floristic changes can be studied, increasing our knowledge and made available for conservation purposes.

The collections include material collected by Pehr Osbeck, Lars Levi Laestadius, Sten Selander, and several others.

Separate collections

There are a number of specimens preserved in alcohol, among others several collections by Nathorst from Spitsbergen.

Databases

The Nordic herbarium collections have been entered into a database for some time, and today more than half of the specimens are available through our on-line herbarium database.

In the Nordic herbarium, the specimens are ordered geographically by country, and the swedish material also by flora province (landscape and lappmarken).

Type material

Type specimens from the Nordic countries are kept in the main type collection, and images and database records for all known nordic vascular plant type specimens at the Nordic herbarium can be accessed through our on-line herbarium databaseexternal link.

Visit the herbarium

The botanical collections at the Swedish Museum of Natural History (S) are currently unavailable for loans and visits. During the time of the extensive renovations of the botany building, the botanical collections are stored ex-situ.

During the renovation period, we still take care of loan returns, and gratefully accept gifts and exchange material. Please feel free to contact us at herbarium@nrm.se for further information or if you have any questions.
