Ecosystems and Species History
This theme deals with the following:
- Historical ecosystem patterns and processes
- Fossil plants and animals
- Large-scale diversity patterns
- Ecosystem processes in geologic time
- Gene lineages
The study of large-scale changes in species diversity through geologic time is important for understanding of why certain ecosystems are more species-rich than others, and how these ecosystems have evolved. Research on historical ecosystem patterns and processes at the Swedish Museum of Natural History is based on fossil organisms, as well as naturally occurring radioactive isotopes and their daughter products.
