New barbels from Myanmar

Puntius didi
South and South East Asia is rich in small-sized, often colorful species currently referred to the catchall Asian cyprinid genus Puntius. Comparative analyses based on morphology, and combined morphology and behaviour characters, suggest that several phylogenetic lineages are involved but there is no phylogenetic analysis available. The Puntius conchonius group is widely distributed in Pakistan, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar, and also present in the Mekong drainage of Laos and Thailand. The group includes 16 small species, less than 80 mm SL, and usually less than 50 mm SL. Many of them are popular aquarium fishes. Ongoing field studies in Myanmar by Sven O Kullander and Fang Fang, both ichthyologists at the Swedish Museum of Natural History, led to the discovery of several undescribed species in the P. conchonius group, and two of them have now been formally described: Puntius didi is found in northern Myanmar in the region of Myitkyina. Puntius tiantian was discovered in the region of Putao in the northernmost corner of Myanmar.
