Swedish ringed Bluethroat found in Pakistan

The Ringing Centre received a report in June that a Bluethroat was shot by a 15-year-old boy on the 4 April 2008 in the village of Watchakhora in Waziristan, western Pakistan. The bird was ringed as a young male at Utklippan Bird Observatory, SE Sweden, on 10 May 2006 during spring migration. The reporter is the same person who reported a recovery of a Swedish ringed Bluethroat in the same area on 31 March 2001. The dates for both recoveries indicate that they probably have started their return migration and that the wintering area is situated further east. The distance from the ringing site to the recovery site for the last recovery is 4867 km.

42 years and 10 months — a new longevity record!

On 3 May 2008 the ring number was read on a ringed Common Guillemot at Stora Karlsö,Gotland, who was ringed as a chick at the same place on 7 July 1965. The bird was observed on a breeding ledge and the ring number was read by telescope from a distance. The ring reading was carried out within a special project studying the Common Guillemots in the colony on the island Stora Karlsö. At the same time another Common Guillemot, ringed as a chick on 9 July 1969, was also observed — 38 years and 10 months old. The oldest Common Guillemot ringed in Sweden before those two birds was 38 years old. This is also the oldest Common Guillemot known in the world and it is the third oldest bird recognized from bird ringing in Europe.

Golden Eagle found in Poland

On 13 January, a ringed Golden Eagle was found at Chelm in eastern Poland. The bird was injured and very weak, probably after a collision with an overhead wire. It has been taken care of and will probably be treated for up to three months. It was ringed as a nestling in the province of Västerbotten in northern Sweden on 18 June 2007. We have a ringed Golden Eagle found in Belarus in April 1993, but this is the most southern recovery of a Golden Eagle ringed in Sweden so far.
