Maria von Balthazar´s main research interests are the diversity and evolution of flowers and angiosperm systematics. She uses evidence from developmental and morphological studies to infer homology of reproductive organs with the goal to understand the evolutionary history of the group under study both at a structural and a phylogenetic level. Her research also makes use of other sources of data such as molecular phylogenetics, developmental genetics, and most recently paleobotany. She considers it most promising to study flowers from various perspectives and to integrate data gained by different approaches. Today Maria works at the University of Vienna.
