Livia's main interests are in the systematics of the flowering plants particularly focusing on the evolution of the flower. Livia has a PhD from the University of Stockholm in systematics and biogeography of the genus Gunnera (Gunneraceae). Livia's current research at the Swedish Museum of Natural History is in two parts: 1) the diversity and evolution of the family Proteaceae; and 2) an investigation of fossil flowers from New Zealand. In addition, Livia is also working within a project dealing with the rise and evolution of pentamerous flowers. She is also running a project on the systematics of the genus Hoya (Apocynaceae).
