The development of the crust and mantle in the Ukrainian shield

The Ukrainian shield is a large region which is badly exposed due to a sedimentary cover. This shield area started to develop in the early Archean (around 3.5 billion years ago). The geology of the shield is still relatively unknown, and the current project carried out in collaboration with e.g. colleagues at Kiev university strives to use radiogenic isotopes to improve the understanding of the geological history. Mainly mafic rocks, that carry information about the underlying mantle, are handled. Basically, Nd, Sr and Pb isotope results from rocks, which represent different crustal blocks and span a large age range (Archean to Devonian), will help to unravel the character of the sub-continental mantle.
