INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR and WORKSHOP on Integrated Pest Management 2001
PRE-MAL arranged an international seminar and workshop on Integrated Pest Management, May 8-11, 2001, at the Swedish Museum of Natural History in Stockholm. The emphasis was put on practical training in non-toxic control methods.Seminar The first day and the afternoon of the third day were chosen for seminar lectures on IPM and various control methods, health hazards, risk assessment and dealing with decision makers. Speakers of the seminar were David Pinniger (UK), Vinod Daniel (Australia), Birgitta Kolmodin-Hedman Anna Hellekant and Désirée Edmar (Sweden). The 39 participants represented ten countries.
Workshops During the second and third days the participants attended three workshops.Identification of pest insects. (David Pinniger, Monika Åkerlund)Temperature control. (Vinod Daniel, Martin Andrén)Low oxygen treatment. (Jan-Erik Bergh, Jon Lønnve)Identification of pest insects A selection of common pest insects, both larvae and adults were studied in microscope. It was specially appreciated to be able see the insects alive. A collection of damaged items was on display. Also a collection of literatures on pest insects and pest control could be studied.

Temperature control Both freezing and heat treatment were performed and discussed in the temperature control workshop. As the weather was nice, the heat treatment was made outside in the sun. It only took twenty minutes to reach the 52º C that are needed.Low oxygen treatment Low oxygen treatments were performed by the use of nitrogen gas and oxygen scavenger. Nitrogen gas was produced by the VELOXY nitrogen generator - a system developed within the SAVE ART project. Nitrogen from a gas cylinder was used in training on the "Mobile unit" from the National Museum of Science and Technology Different barrier films, humidifiers, oxygen analysers and other equipment were discussed.

Inspection The fourth day the participants inspected different stores and collection areas of the museum and reported the results in the presence of representatives from the museum.Excursion For those who stayed during the weekend an excursion was arranged to the summer house of Carolus Linnaeus and the new Viking museum in Uppsala, on Saturday, May 12. The sun was shining even that day. The week of the workshop happened to be the first wonderful week of summer in Stockholm.
