Dr. Jan-Erik Bergh, PRE-MAL´s vice president diseased

After a period of illness, Jan-Erik Bergh left us on June 12.
Jan- Erik was a valued member of PRE-MAL since the start. With a PhD in entomology, and a sincere interest in cultural heritage and preventive conservation, his main task in the group was to lead our research. He was an enthusiastic scientist and a splendid speaker. In April, he presented a paper, at the museum conference in Malmö, on a Nordic project he was leading, despite intensive treatments.

Jan-Erik was a quiet man — but at the same time open, cheerful and free of prestige. It was great fun working with him. He could surprise us with entertaining poems or songs or even with cheerful pranks. "Professor Mountain" made us all burst out with roaring laughter.

Most of all, Jan-Erik was a dear friend. During the more than twenty years we worked together, we got to know each other quite well. We participated in conferences together, wandered about in foreign cities, made practical research tests together, talking about all and nothing. He was always kind. Not much could upset him except injustices and the discontinuity of biology training at universities.

Jan-Erik leaves us all, who had the privilege of knowing him, with a deep sense of loss. We send our sincere condolences to his beloved wife.

Monika Åkerlund
Secretary of PRE-MAL
