Particle transport derived from isotope tracers and its impact on ocean biogeo-chemistry: a GEOTRACES project in the Arctic Ocean

Summary

An important component of biogeochemical cycles in the ocean is the vertical transport of elements on sinking particles that originate from a number of sources and exhibit a range of characteristics. This is of particular importance in the Arctic Ocean, where the nature and supply rate of particles will change as sea ice cover and biological activity change with changes in climate.

In this project we aim to establish high precision methods for determining the isotope systematics using isotopes in the uranium decay series (230Th, 231Pa) to understand the role of particles in biogeochemical cycling across the Arctic Ocean. The project will follow the framework and sampling protocol of the international GEOTRACES project (http://www.geotraces.org/external link, opens in new window). The project comprises a PhD student that will take part in exchange training programs and in the development of necessary analytical methods and modeling efforts. The work will contribute towards an improved understanding of particle dynamics and thus also the transport of carbon and trace elements in the ocean.

This is a joint project between Swedish Museum of Natural History (GEO) and Laboratorie des Sciences du Climat et de l´Environnement (LSCE), Gif sur Yvette, France
