Our operations are based on our great collections. With them as a base, we create knowledge development and disseminate this knowledge by constantly broadening perspectives.
Collections
The collections are meant reflect the nature of our world and provide scientific significance. We must improve the conditions for these collections to be preserved for the future and give researchers and the public access to them in different ways.
Knowledge development
We should raise social knowledge in the natural history field through research and interaction with universities and colleges among other things.

In various ways we disseminate knowledge about the natural environment, the universe and the earth's development and about how it affects society and human conditions.
Collections – preservation and accessibility
The basis of the museum's activities is our collections which consist of about ten million specimens, ranging from whales to pollen and from minerals to DNA. The collections have been collected for over several hundred years by many of Sweden's renowned explorers. These include specimens collected by Adolf Erik Nordenskiöld, Sven Hedin, Vivi Täckholm and of course Carl Linnaeus and his students, and many more. The collections are counted to the ten largest in the world. Some sub collections are unique. An important task for us is therefore to preserve, document and expand these collections. We strive to coninuosly improve the conditions for preservation of the collections and increase the accessibility to them. The responsibility for the collections is shared between the various departments of the Research Division.Knowledge development – fundamental scientific research
The Museum's work with knowledge development is primarily conducted by the Division of Research which carries out fundamental scientific research, particularly in systematics and taxonomy, under the leadership of ten Professors. About seventy scientists are working at the museum. Over forty postgraduate students and about fifteen post doctors are supervised by them. The Research Division also do factual checking and leave expert opinions in cases handled by other authorities.Broadening perspective
We work to give the general public and experts broadened perspectives on the natural environment, the universe and the earth's development and how it affects society and human conditions. Our work is conducted on the basis of the Fauna, Flora and Geology importance with regard to issues concerning the use of the natural environment and cultural heritage. The work on the dissemination of knowledge is shared by all divisions, but most of the work is done by the Public Division departments. In addition to the exhibitions, the Public Division conducts public lectures, tours for school groups, teachers' days, and of course film and planetarium shows at Cosmonova. The Research Division carries out teaching, lectures and publications, scientific as well as popular science.
