DNA-astrologi

Mer information nedan.

Genetic Astrology: Debunking commercial genetic ancestry claims

Genetic ancestry testing is a new and growing industry that has gained widespread media coverage and public interest. Its scientific base is in the fields of population and evolutionary genetics and it has benefitted considerably from recent advances.

Population geneticists have questioned the scientific validity of some population history inference approaches, particularly those of a more interpretative nature. These controversies have spilled over into commercial genetic ancestry testing, with some companies making sensational claims about their products.

During this seminar Professor Mark Thomas will outline some scientific and ethical concerns about selected genetic ancestry testing claims, and discuss the issues raised, including media promotion of commercial enterprises, academic freedom of expression, science and pseudoscience.

Mark Thomas is Professor of Evolutionary Genetics in the Research Department of Genetics, Evolution and Environment at University College London. Mark is notable for a number of scientific publications in the fields of human demographic and evolutionary history inference, molecular phylogenetics of extinct species using ancient DNA, Cultural evolutionary modelling, and molecular biology.

About the seminars

Topics may range from cosmology to conservation biology, with an emphasis on recent scientific advances and cross-discipline interactions.

Our aim is to present lectures that will communicate the excitement of modern science to a varied but scientifically informed audience of scientists, students and laymen.

There are a number of top-notch scientists giving lectures. The seminars are open to everyone interested. Entrance is free. The language is English (occasionally Swedish, as advertised).

We hope for lots of questions and discussions during and after the lectures, and there will be opportunity for an informal get-together after each lecture.

Med reservation för ändringar.
